Rated 5 out of 5 by kmort51 from My Vitamix saves the day!! Again!! I thoroughly enjoy my vitamix machine. Tonight I needed icing sugar to glaze some special Thanksgiving PumpkinSpice Oatmeal cookies and couldn't find any in my pantry. I was going to have to run to the store ... until I remembered I could make some in my vitamix ... sweet!! I also love being able to grind my own whole wheat flour and cracked wheat ... making just enough for a recipe so it's always fresh! I bought one for daughter so she could enjoy similar advantages in her kitchen.

I tried to make powdered sugar but perhaps I didn't blend it long enough? My sugar was still quite grainy. I also didn't use any type of starch.
it is possible you did not blend long enough. Another issue could be the container size? If you are using a next generation machine or a low profile container you will need to double this recipe.

How do you powder a cake with icing sugar and it doesn't melt.
You will want to make sure your cake is completely cooled and there is no excess moisture on the surface to keep the sugar from dissolving.

How do you stop icing sugar from melting?
If you do not want your powdered sugar to melt it is suggested to blend for less than one minute. For storage purposes keep in an air tight container in a cool dry place also, keep away from hot surfaces or high temperatures.

Can either container (regular, or dry) be used to make powdered sugar. And is the cornstarch necessary?
But if you have an allergy to corn (and cornstarch): I made perfect hard sauce and also whipped cream with powdered sugar made from evaporated cane sugar without the cornstarch. Apparently, the cornstarch is not absolutely crucial--in future, it can be sifted if there are clumps.

Will the sugar scratch the plastic blender container?
When blending sugar the container may have a minor discoloration from the sugar residue.

Should you use the dry grains container to make powdered sugar? My daughter is allergic to corn. How much potato, arrowroot, or tapioca starch should I use in place of the corn starch?
You can use your dry grain container to make powdered sugar. I would substitute an equal amount of potato starch to create the same effect.

Why would you add corn starch for powdered sugar?
The cornstarch is added to ensure that the powder sugar does not clump together.
