Vanilla Custard Sauce is rated out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by VitaNewbie from Super Rich, Maybe Too Rich As a Vitamix beginner, I have been following recipes exactly as written and they are either a hit or miss. I haven't made a smoothie yet I didn't like, the two soups I tried were NOT good, and this custard recipe was fantastic... all my opinions, obviously. This vanilla custard was easy to make, requires fresh, but really fattening ingredients, makes enough for 4 people to have seconds, and smells delicious. I poured it hot over pound cake (another FATTENING ingredient, haha) and my family LOVED it. I found it too rich to eat all of my serving, but everyone else had seconds and finished the custard. I'm not a big dessert eater anyway, but those that are loved it. It lost a star because it really doesn't need that much half and half and that much egg yolk. It was too rich for me. I think I'd experiment with lighter ingredients next time. Consensus: I wouldn't hesitate to make this again. I wish I had fresh strawberries to add to the pound cake like Jan used on the QVC Vitamix special, but maybe next time.

Can this be made on the hot soup setting!
Yes, it can. You will want to watch this mixture closely if using the hot soup setting, if you see it start to thicken you may want to shut it off a little sooner to be sure the eggs do not curdle.

What is item 2 in the ingredients list please ? 1 1/2 cups of what (half & half) ?? Also can I make this earlier and reheat it please?
Half & half, if not readily available can be made by mixing half milk and half heavy cream. In this case you would take 3/4 C milk & 3/4 C heavy cream, mix them together and you will have 1 1/2C half & half. Also, if you plan to make this ahead of time and reheat, it would be best to reheat in a hot water bath, watch closely and stir continuously to avoid any curdling.

I could swear that when i made this from the vitamix book it came out thicker. Is this a different recipe?
This is an online recipe, most of the vanilla recipes in our cookbooks are for a vanilla pudding. This recipe will thicken in the fridge, but it is possible you had made the vanilla pudding recipe previously which would have been a thicker consistency.

Yes it can.

in the egg custard what is double cream
In this recipe we are using half and half. Double cream is a substitute for heavy and has a higher fat content than heavy cream.
