TIPS & TRICKS
Blending Basics
Master the essentials that make every blend better. These 7 foundational techniques will help you get the most out of your Vitamix blender, from perfect smoothies to restaurant-quality soups.
BLENDING BASICS
Loading Your Container
Load ingredients in the correct order for optimal blending:
- Liquids (water, juice, yogurt)
- Dry Goods (grains, seasonings, powders)
- Leafy Greens
- Fruits & Veggies
- Ice & Frozen Ingredients
Pro Tip: Placing heavier, frozen items on top helps weigh down lighter ingredients and gets the blend moving faster. This prevents cavitation (air pockets around the blades).
BLENDING BASICS
Blending on High
For smoothies, soups, hummus, or sorbet, start on low and quickly ramp up to high. Blending on high reduces blend time and keeps the motor cool. Always follow recipe instructions, but when in doubt, turn it to high.
BLENDING BASICS
Cover the Blades
Vitamix blenders need a minimum volume of ingredients to blend well. Make sure you use enough ingredients to cover the blades while blending.
BLENDING BASICS
Save Time on Food Prep
Vitamix blenders quickly break down large chunks of fruit and veggies—you don't have to chop anything smaller than a quarter of an apple. Long, skinny ingredients like carrots and celery can be added whole through the lid while the blender is running.
BLENDING BASICS
The Lid Plug Trick
The lid plug of your Vitamix container doubles as a small measuring cup. Look closely for half-ounce and one-ounce fill lines—perfect for cocktail recipes or thinning blends with small amounts of liquid.
BLENDING BASICS
Every Last Bit
The Under Blade Scraper is specially designed to fit into every nook and cranny of your Vitamix container, so you get the most from each blend.
BLENDING BASICS
Self-Cleaning Container
All Vitamix blenders are self-cleaning:
- Add a few drops of dish soap
- Fill halfway with warm water
- Run on high for 30-60 seconds (or run the Clean program)
Note: All newer containers are dishwasher safe. Check which model you own!
TIPS & TRICKS
Food Processing
Transform your meal prep with the Food Processor Attachment. From lightning-fast chopping to perfectly shredded cheese, learn how to safely handle, maintain, and maximize this versatile tool with these 7 tips and tricks.
CHOPPING
Chop, Dice, and Mince in Seconds
Use the multi-purpose blade with Pulse to chop veggies to the perfect size in just a few minutes.
SAFETY FIRST
Handle Blades With Care
The multi-use blade and slicing/shredding discs are sharp. Pick up the chopping blade by the plastic hub, and the discs by their finger‐holes to avoid injury. Always ensure the motor is off and the work bowl is locked for safety.
SLICING & SHREDDING
Precision Food Prep
Food prep becomes faster and more precise when you use the reversible Small Shred/Thin Slice and Large Shred/Thick Slice discs. Also available: the Fine Shred/Ultra-Thin Slice, Julienne, and Veggie Stick discs.
CHEESE TIPS
Shredded Cheese in Seconds
Use the shred disc on your Vitamix Food Processor Attachment. Start with a cold, firm block of cheese (hard or semi-hard like Parmesan, cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Asiago)—they hold shape and shred cleanly.
CLEANING
Easy to Clean
After processing, remove the lid, bowl, blades/discs, and food pushers. All except the self-detect base are dishwasher-safe. For the base, simply wipe with a warm soapy cloth and dry (don't immerse it).
TROUBLESHOOTING
Clearing the Chute
If ingredients jam in the chute, stop the unit and remove the pusher. Then use the small food pusher to gently nudge or lift the stuck pieces (never your fingers). Re-insert the large pusher and resume. This ensures safe clearing without damaging the blades or feed tube.
STORAGE
Nest & Store Neatly
To reclaim cupboard space, stack the accessory parts: place the multi-use blade into the bowl, invert the lid, set the small pusher in the lid centre, then snap on the storage case to the bottom of the lid. This keeps everything compact and ready.
TIPS & TRICKS
Immersion Blending
Your handheld powerhouse deserves proper technique. From splash-free blending to perfect whipped cream, these 8 tips will help you master every attachment and keep your immersion blender in top shape.
REDUCE SPLASHING
Minimize the Mess
Fully submerge the bell of the blender before turning it on, and keep it angled slightly. Start on low speed, then increase gradually once ingredients begin to blend. Avoid lifting the blades above the surface while running to prevent splashing.
DESIGNED FOR THE VORTEX
Try the Blending Jar
The shape of the Blending Jar is designed to create the Vitamix vortex, just like our full-size blending containers. The vortex continuously moves ingredients through the blades, giving you faster, more consistent results. Plus, you can keep blended mixtures fresh by storing them right in the blending jar with the lid on.
FLUFFY IN MINUTES
Whip with the Whisk
Give your arm a break, and use the whisk attachment for fluffy whipped cream in about a minute.
EASY ATTACHMENT
Twist to Connect
The blending and whisk attachments are simple to attach, just twist to lock in place.
NO SCRUBBING REQUIRED
Quick Self-Clean
Add warm water and a drop of dish soap to your blending jar or bowl. Run the immersion blender for 20–30 seconds to loosen residue, then rinse and dry—no scrubbing required.
DISHWASHER FRIENDLY
Top-Rack Safe
The blending wand and other accessories are dishwasher safe. Place them on the top rack and avoid high-heat cycles to protect plastic and seals. Hand-wash when in doubt for longer life. Most Vitamix containers are dishwasher safe, so check which one you own.
DUAL-PURPOSE LID
Chop & Store
After chopping, remove the blade and reattach the chopper base upside down to seal the bowl. It doubles as a storage lid for leftovers or prepped ingredients.

Techniques for Blending
Take your blending skills to the next level with these 4 techniques. Learn how to handle challenging blends, maximize capacity, and unlock versatile chopping methods that save time in the kitchen.
TECHNIQUES
Master the Tamper
For thick, challenging blends, the tamper helps get the mixture moving while breaking up air pockets around the blade. Simply rotate the tamper around the four corners of the container until a vortex forms and your blend moves freely.
TECHNIQUES
Full Container Blending
Cooking for a crowd? Vitamix blenders can pulverize a full container of ingredients. When they start to blend down, add even more through the lid plug opening while the machine is running.
TECHNIQUES
Drop Chopping
For a quick dice, drop ingredients like onion, garlic, or carrot through the lid plug opening into the spinning blades.
TECHNIQUES
Wet Chopping
Quickly mince or "rice" large amounts of veggies like cauliflower:
- Break the veggie into large chunks
- Place them in the blending container
- Fill with enough water so veggies float above the blades
- Pulse until desired texture is reached
- Strain the water out
Pro Tip: Perfect for cauliflower pizza crust!
